  • BCS Title Game to feature SEC duo in rematch

After five straight years of SEC teams winning the BCS National Championship it is now a guarantee that the streak will increase to six straight years. For the first time in the BCS era that dates back to 1998, two teams from the same conference will face off as the #1 LSU Tigers will face the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide. Of course LSU defeated Alabama in early November by a score of 9-6 in overtime in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and proceeded to win the SEC Championship Game this past weekend defeating Georgia 42-10.

So once again #1 LSU and #2 Alabama will meet, this time in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 9, 2012 in the BCS Championship Bowl Game.

  • LSU remains unanimous #1, Alabama #2, Arkansas #3 in AP Top 25

The SEC’s dominance continues. A week after the SEC held 3 of the top 6 spots in the AP’s version of the college football Top 25, LSU, Alabama and Arkansas are now seen as the 3 best teams in the land. LSU, the unanimous #1 a week ago, remains #1 with all 60 1st place votes for the second week in a row as the leaders of the West Division in the SEC football standings. SEC East winning Georgia comes in at #13 this week with South Carolina #14 to round out the Top 25 with 5 SEC schools in the Top 14. Meanwhile, Auburn scored the 28th highest vote total as the Tigers (7-4) look to get back into the Top 25 with a win over Alabama on Saturday.

  • SEC Bowl Predictions – November 17 Update

The SEC is poised for another exciting year of beating up on the rest of the college football world this bowl season as 11 of the 12 SEC schools remain bowl eligible with only Ole Miss eliminated from postseason play. While schools like Kentucky and Tennessee need to win out in their final two games of the season to finish 6-6 and bowl eligible, it seems likely that 2 BCS bowl berths and another 7-8 other bowl berths will be going to SEC schools. Here is a look at what is expected current per the latest bowl predictions from Football-Bowl.com:

SEC Teams in BCS Bowl Games

    • LSU to the BCS Championship vs. Oklahoma State
    • Alabama to the Sugar Bowl vs. Michigan

SEC Teams Projected to Non-BCS Bowl Games:

    • Vanderbilt to the Music City Bowl vs. Virginia
    • Mississippi State to the Liberty Bowl vs. Houston
    • Florida vs. Virginia Tech in the Chick Fil A Bowl
    • Arkansas to the Capital One Bowl vs Michigan State
    • South Carolina vs Penn State in the Gator Bowl
    • Georgia vs Nebraska in the Outback Bowl
    • Auburn vs Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl

The list above leaves both Kentucky and Tennessee out of the bowl picture as one team is assured of NOT being bowl eligible since the two meet in the final week of the season. Tennessee has the best opportunity facing Vanderbilt this weekend before playing at Kentucky on November 26th, while Kentucky plays at SEC East Division leader Georgia this weekend. It is very possible that both schools are eliminated from bowl eligibility altogether giving the MAC or Conference USA an opportunity for an at-large bid.

  • LSU now unanimous #1, AP loves SEC football

After LSU, the first unanimous #1 in the AP in three years, the Alabama Crimson Tide are #3 with Arkansas #6 moving up two spots after both Boise State and Stanford both fell from the ranks of the unbeaten this past weekend. Rounding out the remainder of the SEC teams in the Top 25 are #13 Georgia and #14 South Carolina. Also receiving votes was Auburn, who fell from #24 after losing to Georgia.

  • SEC Final: LSU wins defensive battle over Alabama, 9-6

After a first half dominated by defense in the #1 LSU @ #2 Alabama game, the second half did nothing but mirror the first half. Alabama led 6-3 after three quarters but LSU answered with a 30 yard FG by Alleman to tie the game. Brad Wing’s 73 yard punt midway through the 4th quarter in a 6-6 game certainly changed the field position in LSU’s favor, but after Alabama was forced to punt on their next possession, a dumb penalty on Tyron Mathieu pinned LSU deep after receiving the ball with under 5 minutes to play. After LSU drove to near midfield, the Alabama defense stuffed the run on a critical 3rd and 2 with under two minutes to play.

After Alabama got the ball back with 52 seconds to play, the Crimson Tide chose to run the clock out and play overtime football. With regulation now behind them all of the stats showed how even the game was: Time of Possession 30:06 to 29:54 in favor of Alabama, Turnovers 2-2, Penalties 6-5 with LSU picking up one more than the Tide, and of course a 6-6 game.

In overtime, Alabama’s penalty for a substitution infraction pushed the Tide back to the 30 yard line, eventually setting up a 3rd and 15 which then resulted in a sack and a 52 yard FG attempt that Foster pushed wide left giving LSU a chance to win. On LSU’s first possession of the overtime period, the Tigers got a big play on an option left with Ford stepping out of bounds at the 7 yard line. LSU then called two conservative running plays to set up the 25 yard FG attempt for Drew Alleman. After a Nick Saban time out to attempt to ice the kicker, the strategy did not work as Alleman drilled the kick through the uprights sending the home crowd clad in Alabama Crimson Tide apparel home disappointed while the small crowd of fans in LSU clothing remained undefeated.

The win for #1 LSU puts them at 9-0 and in the driver’s seat with the BCS Championship Game in their grasp. Alabama, on the other hand, needs some help and is left to hope for a shot at a rematch in that game.

  • Florida, Georgia & Kentucky winners in early SEC games

Early Saturday SEC football games are in the books with Florida and Kentucky winners in SEC games with Georgia winning a non-conference affair. Florida snapped a 4-game losing streak holding off Vanderbilt 26-21 in the swamp to improve the Gators’ record to 5-4. The win is critical for Florida as they look ahead to the bowl season as the latest bowl projections from Football-Bowl.com had the Gators facing Virginia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The Wildcats fell behind 6-0 early and then turned it on against Ole Miss for a 30-13 win to improve to 4-5 overall. With Vandy, Georgia and Tennessee all remaining on their schedule, Kentucky will need another win to become bowl eligible. Finally Georgia, playing without several suspended players in a non-conference home game against New Mexico State (3-6), handled the Aggies easily 63-16 to improve to 7-2 overall. The Bulldogs are currently tied atop the SEC East and while they are poised to play in a top-tier SEC bowl game they could be looking at BCS Bowl Game if they can win out and make the SEC Championship Game.

  • Corso picks LSU, Herbstreit chooses Alabama on ESPN’s College GameDay

College GameDay sets up weekly at the top game of the week location, either on campus at many of the most popular schools in the nation or outside their stadiums each Saturday morning. This week, set outside Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama before the big #1 LSU @ #2 Alabama game, College GameDay featured the standard crew of Desmond Howard, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and today’s guest picker, San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson. Wilson, who pitched in college at LSU, came out with his patented beard in a LSU football jersey uniform and when asked for his pick later donned a LSU Tiger head with a Brian Wilson beard on the mascot head. The fans in attendance, who were mostly seen wearing Alabama Crimson Tide merchandise, responded to Wilson’s pick with a chorus of boos. Herbstreit, who was allowed to make a pick today since he is not broadcasting the game, picked up a Bear Bryant hat showing his pick for Alabama. The final pick, and easily the most hyped pick given his history of donning school mascot head gear and even armor, came from former Indiana head coach Lee Corso. Corso, who made his 200th head gear prediction earlier this season, chose the LSU Tiger head after making the home crowd of Alabama fans think he was leaning their way.

In what is being billed as the biggest regular season game in college football history, SEC-fans.com is here with our Alabama vs LSU football preview and ready for the game providing our game recap before the weekend is over. While the winner is in the driver’s seat for the BCS National Championship bowl game, the loser may indeed see a BCS bowl game as well given the SEC’s overall strength and history of bowl success.
